A Brief History of Port Wine:
Port wine has been produced in the Douro Valley for centuries, with its origins tied to English merchants who fortified the wines with brandy to preserve them for export. Over time, Port evolved into a distinct and highly regulated style of wine, known for its richness, depth, and ability to age for decades. The Douro Valley remains the only region where authentic Port can be produced, with estates like Quinta do Vesúvio continuing the tradition of crafting world-class Vintage Ports.
1995 Vintage Report:
The 1995 vintage in the Douro Valley was marked by a dry winter, followed by a cool and wet spring, which delayed flowering. However, the summer was warm and steady, allowing for excellent ripening conditions. Harvest took place under favourable conditions, producing balanced and well-structured wines. While not as widely declared as blockbuster vintages, the 1995s are known for their elegance, depth, and ageing potential.
Tasting Note for Quinta do Vesúvio 1995 Vintage Port:
The Quinta do Vesúvio 1995 Vintage Port is a deep, inky ruby color, showing little sign of fading with age. On the nose, it exudes an intense bouquet of black cherries, cassis, and ripe plums, interwoven with hints of violets, dark chocolate, and exotic spices. The palate is full-bodied and opulent, with layers of black fruit, licorice, and a touch of mocha, framed by firm yet refined tannins. A lively acidity balances the richness, ensuring freshness and a long, persistent finish with lingering notes of blackberry, spice, and a hint of minerality. This vintage is drinking beautifully now, with its structure softening into a refined and elegant expression, but it still has the potential to evolve further with additional cellaring.
